Encompassing just under four acres, with perhaps one third of that in crops and pasture, it truly is a tiny little farm. Along with her on this hill reside a half dozen sheep, a handful of bantam chickens, a pair of geese, three dogs, and a cat named Steve. And although the greenhouse construction was completed at the end of 2009, it is really 2010 that marks the beginning of the market garden, and the beginning of the tiny little farm. The goal here is to grow and sell not just locally, but also seasonally - with an eye towards increased sustainability. Kathleen grows a wide variety of heirloom and unusual herbs and vegetables, as well as cut flowers. You can read the list of products here and you can see the location of her farm on google maps. Kathleen is also a talented graphic designer and mixed media artist who is constantly creating and learning new things. Visit the Tulip Tree Farm blogspot for more information about Kathleen's farm and art studio. topHamid HamidIn the beginning, their was Hamid Hamid. His face smiles and radiates from the Eastern Market mural the same it does at the produce stand. Hamid was born in Jerusalem and came to the United States at a young age. He brings a piece of his mother land to Eastern Market every day. You can try his middle-eastern varieties of cucumbers, zucchinis, cabbage, and eggplants or you can try his other locally sourced produce that includes spinach, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, okra, cherries, and peaches. And in an effort to appeal to all cultures, Hamid occasionally carries more exotic fruits like pineapples, mango, and star fruits. Nowal Hamid's FalafelNowal's authentic falafels have quickly become a success at Eastern Market. She opened alongside her husband Hamid Hamid's produce stand after arriving from Jerusalem in 2008. Each falafel is made with 4 falafel balls stuffed into a pita pocket along with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, hot sauce, and the sesame-based tahini sauce. You can read a food critic's review of the Eastern Market falafel stand. Nowal is also available to cater small events with a variety of middle eastern cuisine: stuffed eggplant, goulash, falafel, and more!
